What is a Tenebrae Service? The word Tenebrae is Latin for ‘shadows’ or ‘darkness’. The Office of Tenebrae, a Holy Week devotion dating back to the seventh or eight century A.D., is characterized by the successive extinguishing of candles as the service progresses.Meant to recreate the emotional angst of the Passion, it is a perfect service for Good Friday and Holy Week.Again, this year, our Tenebrae service will be modified to include music depicting the events of Holy Week and the emo-tional turmoil of Good Friday. The music is interspersed with Scripture readings that heighten the gravity of the Passion. The service ends with a loud symbolic closing of the tomb and represents an unfinished story to be completed on Easter Sunday. This is an incredibly moving and spiritual service that has been around for centuries! Please consider joining us.
